A charming walk through Dr Zakir Hussain Rose Garden Chandigarh

Love open air and plenty of greenery filled with the fragrant scents of flora? The place to be is the Dr Zakir Hussain Rose Garden in the city of Chandigarh, Punjab. Mind you, you need to set aside a lot of hours to spend here, another option being to split the visit on two days. Most important is not to visit at that time of the year when you are unlikely to see the flowering blooms!

So, first off, a tip is to visit in the early months of the year. Even better is to check out the schedule of the annual rose festival which is generally organized in February or March and then, accordingly, plan your trip to Chandigarh. During this festival, you will get to see unusual floral creations as displays and, if you are keen, you can attend cultural programs as well. Secondly, look out for unseasonal weather changes. An unexpected shower of rain and cloudy weather can create spoilsport and confine you indoors to your hotel!

About the Garden
Originally named the Government Rose Garden, this huge space of greenery was planned out by ex-ICS Dr. M. S. Randhawa, who was Chief Commissioner of Chandigarh Union Territory. With a postgraduate Degree in Botany and a deep interest in horticulture, his meticulous planning can be seen in the over 30 acres of green expanse.

Other than the more than thousand species of roses, the garden is dotted with towering trees, botanical pants, groups of shrubs, water bodies and fountains. Walking pathways crisscross throughout and there is a smattering of benches in shady areas. Please do not pluck any of the flowers and absolutely no littering - you can be fined if you do.
